Sustainable Hair Care

Sustainability, at its most basic, is the effort to sustain our natural resources and environment.

When deciding what products to use on clients and sell as retail, we have done much research on finding brands that compliment our sustainability goals as a business.

Davines

Davines, founded in 1983, recognized that beauty and sustainability go hand-in-hand, which is why their tagline is “Beauty + Sustainability.”

BY CREATING BEAUTY SUSTAINABLY, WE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY LIVE & WORK, AND OF THE THINGS THEY LOVE.
— davide bollati, davines president

They operate their business understanding that beauty means taking care not only of yourself, but of your world and what you love as well. For that reason, sustainability inspires all of their policies and projects, including product formulation and design, company ethics, and salon education. And, they interpret it in a number of ways: it prioritizes a positive impact on the environment, doesn’t compromise the quality or quantity of natural ingredients, lends itself to intuition and creation, and ensures transparency.

One overarching way they stay sustainable is with their commitment to renewable energy and their offsetting of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e). Considering that the world’s energy consumption is expected to grow 40% over the next two decades—far surpassing the earth’s capacity to renew them—a cleaner alternative is vital. Plus, emissions come with carbon energy consumption, which pollute the air and impact our collective health on a regular basis. For that reason, they’ve used renewable electric energy from natural sources (such as sun, water, wind, and soil) to supply their plants and offices since 2006.

Davines products are similarly kind to the planet. They’ve implemented a Zero Impact® policy for their Essential Haircare, SU, OI, and More Inside product lines, which means the production of their packaging is carbon neutral. To offset the emissions generated, Davines contributes to the creation and protection of forests in Italy, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, and Madagascar. And for all of their packaging, they keep three goals in mind: to use as little raw materials as possible, to use recyclable or bio-based materials, and to optimize logistics to avoid waste.

35% of their packaging is bio-based or recycled, and all Essential Haircare containers are dishwasher safe for the purpose of being reused- they make great snack containers or plant starters! They use a Circular eco-design for packaging, their first principle being to use less material by designing lighter packaging. Lighter packaging not only consumes less material, but it also translates into lower CO2eq emissions; the efforts made from 2014-2022 allowed the Davines Group to avoid the use of 160 tonnes of plastic thanks to the reduction of the packaging weight and the elimination of unnecessary components. Davines is also proud to say that the material of their plastic packaging is recyclable and dreams of having a new life! For example, recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate, also called PET, is the name of a type of clear, strong, lightweight and 100% recyclable plastic) can be transformed into textile fibers to make beach towels, umbrellas, backpacks, and much more.

Davines also supports sustainable ingredients by nurturing and highlighting those at risk of extinction. With the help of Slow Food Presidia, they’ve been able to source ingredients from small family farms in Italy and feature them in our formulas, where they offer a range of benefits for hair. Biodegradable ingredients also play a big role in Davines formulas—as rather than create waste, they simply return to the earth.

They opt for naturally-derived ingredients wherever possible, too. To qualify as naturally-derived, 100% of the molecule must come from a plant, non-petroleum mineral, water, or some other natural source (so long as it’s obtained through a “clean” chemical reaction).

R+Co Bleu

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY. CONSCIOUSLY CREATED.

R+Co ‘s Bleu line is founded upon the guiding principle that luxury today is defined by unparalleled quality and performance, overarching thoughtfulness and a commitment to sustainable practices. How we treat our planet and how we treat ourselves are inextricable.

A cornerstone of the company’s philosophy and design is its commitment to using PCR: post-consumer resources. This includes recovering plastics and single-use components once the initial lifecycle has been completed.

RECYCLABLE PACKAGING:

Bottles and jars are made of 100% post-consumer recycled material, which use 88% less energy to produce, further lowering the company’s carbon footprint. Tubes are constructed from bioresin sugarcane plastic. Canisters are crafted from 100% aluminum. A recyclable resource, 75% of the aluminum ever produced in the United States is still in use today.

Cartons and secondary packaging are developed from 100% post-consumer recycled paper sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified forests. A beautiful sheet of seed-embedded paper is included with each product which, when planted, grows wildflowers.

ONE TREE PLANTED:

R+Co Bleu is delighted to partner with One Tree Planted, to which a portion of every purchase is donated in order to aid global reforestation efforts.

Currently the partnership is focused on creating a koala wildlife corridor in Australia, which involves several aspects to restore and protect the Northern Rivers population of the iconic Australian Koala as well as other threatened wildlife species whose habitats were severely impacted by the recent wildfires in Australia.
